Professor Thabisani is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Walter Sisulu University. He is a professor of literary and cultural studies, focusing on identity politics in Southern Africa, particularly the intersections of race, class, ethnicity, and gender. As a researcher rated by the National Research Foundation of South Africa, his work is highly regarded and frequently cited. It explores various themes, which include literary representations of human rights, nationhood, monuments and memorialisation, migration, masculinities, the black middle class, and whiteness. He has received several academic fellowships and is also a writer of short fiction, with his stories appearing in various anthologies, notably the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2009. Prior to joining Walter Sisulu University in 2014, he was the Deputy Director of the International Human Rights Exchange Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand.
